Introducing the Bag

In today’s busy world where we face new challenges every day, it is especially important to have tools that are both practical and feel good to make. Today we are going to introduce you to one of the most popular and sought-after bag making patterns: “Leather bag using laser cutting pattern”. This small but extremely practical bag is not only great for beginners in sewing, but even professionals have made it many times and enjoyed it. One of the outstanding features of this design is the simplicity and speed of its construction, which at the same time brings a professional and beautiful result. In this tutorial, we will work using high-quality synthetic leather, which gives these bags a luxurious and modern look and we ensure that the final product will not only be eye-catching, but also very resistant and durable.

Creative Design and Material Selection: From Tradition to Innovation

Creative Design and Material Selection: From Tradition to Innovation

The beauty of a leather bag using a laser cut pattern lies in its design flexibility. While traditional methods such as “patchwork” can be used for the top panel of the bag, which gives it a classic, handmade, yet professional look, it is also possible to choose any other material. This freedom in choosing materials gives you the freedom to create a unique piece. Today, with the unparalleled variety of synthetic leather on the market, we can go for innovation and use it to create a bag that has both the appearance of natural leather and the functional benefits of synthetic leather. As a leather expert, I emphasize that using quality synthetic leather not only contributes to environmental sustainability, but is also an economical and accessible option for all leathercraft enthusiasts. This choice also allows us to play with different colors and textures and create bags with different themes.

One of the crucial aspects of this project is the use of an inner lining with the ability to store materials. This lining ensures that your bag is completely safe and hygienic for carrying all kinds of snacks, fruits and sandwiches. In today’s digital world, where data “security” and information “authentication” are of utmost importance, we also seek the same level of security for our consumer products in the physical world.

Using leather and alternative materials

Although we’re focusing on leather or faux leather in this tutorial, the flexibility of the pattern allows you to use any material you like. However, using leather, whether natural or high-quality faux, will give the bag a unique look and exceptional durability. For the interior of the snack bag, it is highly recommended to use food-safe linings to ensure the health of the user. This approach will increase the durability of the product over time and allow for repeated use. The top panel of the bag can also be made using different techniques, such as leather patchwork or using a single piece of leather, each of which has its own beauty and allows you to showcase your personal style. Choosing textured or plain leather, matte or shiny, can make a huge difference in the final look.

Physical Templates and Accurate Measuring Tips

Physical Templates and Accurate Measuring Tips

To speed up and increase accuracy in making these bags, it is highly recommended to use a physical template set. If you plan to make a large number of these bags, these templates are a great tool that will save you from having to measure with a ruler. Experience has shown that even professional leatherworkers who are used to using a ruler enjoy working with these templates because they significantly increase the accuracy and speed of work. All the exact measurements and patterns needed for this bag are available in previous OakArts tutorial videos or in the descriptions of the related videos, so you don’t need to buy a pattern and can get the information you need by referring to free resources. These templates ensure that each bag made has the same dimensions and shape and enhance the final quality of your product.

Here are the instructions for making a simple leather bag without sewing.
Leather: A large piece of vegetable tanned leather
Leather binding/strap: Approximately 3 yards needed for the entire project
Leather needle: A special needle for lacing
Blade or cutter: For precise cutting of the straps.
Laser cutter: Optional tool for faster and more accurate cutting.

Preparation and initial assembly steps:

1. Cutting and drilling the pieces:
You can cut the pattern lines by hand with a blade or craft scissors and make the holes with a 1/8" drill (or leather punch). Or, for greater efficiency, use a laser cutter.
2. Preparing the needle and strap:
To work with the "Perma Lok" lacing needle, cut the end of the leather strap into a cone shape, insert the sharp tip into the hole of the needle and twist until it is completely tight and locked.
3. Shaping the tabs:
Remove the center piece (long rectangle). Using a damp sponge, wet and soften the tabs until they are pliable. Then bend the tabs to a precise 90-degree angle. This will make it much easier and more accurate to attach this piece to the side surfaces in the next steps.

Step 4: Begin Attaching the Front Panel to the Center Body

At this point, you will notice that the front piece has two more holes than the center piece (the first and last holes are not paired).
1) Start by only passing the strap through the first hole in the front piece; insert the needle from the rough (back) side of the leather and exit from the smooth (top) side.
2) Leave about 15 cm (6 inches) of the strap loose on the back of the leather.
3) Then, pass the needle through the second hole in the front panel and the first hole in the center piece at the same time to begin the body connection.
Step 5: Complete the strapping around the bag
1) Continue the strapping process alternately (one hole up and the next hole down) until the end.
2) Make sure that the strap always remains straight and if it gets twisted, untie it before tightening.
3) Finally, pass the needle only through the last hole in the front piece (which does not have a corresponding hole in the center body).
4) Leave about 15cm of the end of the strap free again for finishing. The gaps in the tabs at this point will help the center body fit perfectly with the curve of the front panel.

Step 6: Tethering and hiding the ends of the straps
To remove unsightly knots and create a professional look, follow these steps:
Prepare: Dampen the top edge of the front piece with a sponge to make it easier to shape.
1) Pass the free end of the strap through the first stitch and into the inside of the bag.
2) Pull the moistened edge of the center piece tightly so that it lies on the work and creases.
3) Pass the end of the strap back and forth under the previous stitches on the inner layer.
4) Pull the straps very tight so that they are hidden under the edge of the leather and are not visible from the outside.
5) After 3 or 4 passes, cut off the excess strap. The end of the work is now completely and neatly tied without any knots.
